Approved KFPS stallion with breeding privileges - exceptional quality to warrant consideration

There are approximately 75 approved stallions in the world. A quarter of these are in North America with the remainder in The Netherlands and Europe. As yet Australia has no approved stallions.

In order to be eligible for approval status the stallion must not have a pedigree that contains any mares registered in the B Books for four generations, nor must the pedigree contain any Foal Book parents or grand-parents.

Nor must his pedigree have any white on the legs in the first three generations. The dam, grand dam and great grand dam must all be star or star quality mares.

If the prospective stallion meets these first requirements they are then judged for Eligibility based on physical appearance - to be eligible for consideration as a candidate for the Central Stallion Proving, stallions must be at least 1.58 metres (15.2¼ hands) at age 3 and at least 1.60 metres (15.3 hands) at age 4, be entirely black with no white markings except for a small star or a few white hairs on the forehead. They must demonstrate to the inspection jury that their movement and conformation is of sufficiently high quality.

If the stallion passes all of these criteria, he is then put through a rigorous performance test under saddle and driven to test his ability and temperament. His sperm is tested, he is X-rayed and much more.

If after this he is accepted, his progeny will be judged for four years after approval, to ensure he is making a positive impact on the breed or his approval will be withdrawn.
